i am building this plane with full sized, futaba s3003 servos. they are a lot bigger and i am having problems getting 2 of them to fit inside the fuselage. any suggestions?

With a plane this small, you should be fine as a bank and yank so just go with the elevator and fixed rudder.

Love this build. One question: why leave the air scoop on the bottom of the Mustang when it could be left off and thus improve aerodynamics? (or perhaps make the scoop more angled or smaller)

I realize it's a break from the pure Mustang aesthetic, but seems like it'd be worth the trade-off for many folks.

What weight of cardstock does FT use for sheeting? I want to trace some copies when my Corsair and Mistang speed build kit arrives today. :)
Also do you know the weight of the paper on Adams Rediboard? Weight in grams per sq. meter (gsm) would be great. Thanks

Josh, didn't know where to post. Love how the builds are evolving. How about some form of seaplane with high mount pusher prop as the next build.

I just got my kit, and I am wondering the same. I guess the same technique can be adapted from the full size, perhaps a smaller gage of wire. I am looking around for other solutions, I will let you know what I find.

In building my Mini Mustang I used the F pack of electronics. After all of the servos were installed I tested them for center and only one of the four worked. Now I have all of the servos installed and only one of them works. I am unable to get 5 gram servos locally so the whole project comes to a halt. Bummer!

Are the formers for the hatch off a bit on the plans? On the video Josh states they should be long enuff to go thru the holes on the fuse. Should the two on the hatch be the same height, and depth?

Yep I got the same problem, they are not even close, need to do some modifying

You're right. The formers are way off. Formers A B and D need the rectangular tab to be extended by one DTF-board-thickness, which I think is 5mm. The skewer hole in Former D currently rests in the center of the fuselage foam layer, so the skewer would pierce between the paper layers. I don't think that is the intention.

I noticed that only one had the long tongue and didn't think much of it until I skinned it. I the video though Josh says both fomers on the hatch oare the same. Does anyone know if its supposed to be 2 Bs or 2 Cs? I also noticed the forward bottom sheet is too long, is there a reason for that? One tip I wanted to share too, if the slots for the control rods are cut about 1/2 inch longer in the fuselage, there is a lot less binding.

This build looks really great. What's the thickness of the foamboard? I want to build it from scratch. Thanks in advance.
RCMasterx on August 22, 2016
The foam board is 3/16" or 4.7mm thick. The cavities cut for removal of foam in order to make the A and B folds and holes cut for tabs to be inserted will have to match the width of whatever foam thickness you are using. Just be aware that using a thickness other than what the design calls for can throw off other elements of the build. Also, the thicker board is heavier. -JD

I bought the Mini Speedster Kit and the foam is 4.7mm thick. I measured it pretty accurate and I am pretty shure every model uses the same foamboard. Now I am scratch building the Mini Mustang. I found foam witch is about a millmeter thicker and heavier and not as tough but i think it will work fine.

Hobbyking does Un-covered foam which is 5mm, all Flite Test stuff is approx 5mm.
If in the US dollar tree foam board is about 5mm and very similar, if in the U.K. Hobby craft do west foam, which is 5mm but paper removal is impossible,

This is awesome, thanks! About the Control Surface Throws: 12ยบ deflection (elevator/aileron/rudder). What does this actually mean, since there is a Throw Gauge in the plans with different degrees of 11ยบ low and 15ยบ high? Thanks again from Brazil.

How would power pack A, with an 1806 motor, fly on this model?
insomaniac45 on July 31, 2017
I'm using the larger pack, and flew at less than half throttle, so as long as you build light, you should have no issues other than using a little more throttle

Stevesteve on February 6, 2018
I know this is an old question but for anyone else wondering-
Yes, the mini mustang will fly on a 1806 motor, my first one was built with 12g metal gear servos and an 1806 motor , the test flight was done on a 5030 prop and it flew great, just make sure you get all your weight forward enough to balance. I have since changed the prop to a 6030 for more pull and have a 6040 to try.

I've also built this with 5g servos and a 2204 motor but haven't given it a test flight yet.

It seems the servo cut-outs on the bottom of the wing are missing from the plans. I can work this out on my own, but I have been building planes for over 20 years. Novice builders may have trouble with this. I would like to suggest revising the plans to include the cut-outs. Looking at these comments, I'm surprised no one has mentioned this before. Y'all do a great job. Keep up the good work! -JD

You're right. I also noticed that the canopy formers are quite off as well, so I second your motion for an update of the plans.

In the build video, josh does cover this, as you can run it as a 3ch. He also explains how and where to put the servos for the ailerons. So as long as you follow the video with your build you will have no issues :)

Josh mentions in the build video that the powerpod has to be shaved down a bit for the right thrust angle. Can anyone help with telling me how many mm should be taken off at the back? I assume it is still meant to be a straight line from the front of the pod to the back so it sits flush against the top sheet of foam just that the angle of that line is not meant to be at right angle to the firewall?

Thanks for the help. Love the planes and plans

Just flew my scratch built MMM ๐Ÿ˜Ž.

Wow, she is quick, running the emac 2204 motor with 6045 prop.
Even on low rates the turns on a dime. Fantastic second or third plane,
She did get buffeted by the wind quite a bit, but in calm weather she will be so much better.
Great plane absolutely love it ๐Ÿ˜Ž

What do I build next?
Have built
Storch,
Bronco,
Tiny trainer,
Se5,
Both 22s
Bravo
Guinea pig,

So what's next ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I'm having some trouble with mine, it noes dives after 2 metres. I did check COG is 25mm back from wing edge. Any ideas why it would noes dive? I did use a larger 35 Amp ESC but COG was roughly correct.

Piewww, just finished my build but since my servo's ( SG90 mini) where to big i could not get the wing in the body....darn lol. So i just made a cut in the body and after the wing was in i just glued the cut again ;-)
But i will be building a second one and on that i am gonna sink the servo's into the wing by cutting a hole just leaving the paper.
Like more people are mentioning the cuts for the servo's are not shown in the build plans so maybe someone could add those ? Also there is a hole in the bottomsheet A ( For landing gear i guess ? ) that could maybe be marked as optional since it's not really needed when not putting on wheels.
Great little plane and hope to fly it soon !!
